Bing Crosby Sheet Music

Introduction

This listing is in response to a request on the Bing Crosby Internet Museum bulletin board for a listing of Bing Crosby's sheet music. Charles Baillie, Mark Scrimger, and Marilee Stankowski graciously agreed to provide lists of their own extensive Bing Crosby sheet music collections. Our thanks go to Mark, Marilee, and Charlie for the many hours they spent going through literally thousands of pieces of sheet music to compile their lists. Our thanks also go to Marq Stankowski and Malcolm Macfarlane for their assistance in coordinating the lists and for proofreading the final drafts.

All the music listed below has Bing's picture or his name printed on it, or is very closely associated with his career through other people, such as Paul Whiteman. Concerning movies and a couple of TV productions, the title of the film or TV show is listed only when the sheet music mentions or promotes a movie or show. There are a few exceptions, but these are noted in the text. The presence of a piece of music with movie title in this list does not imply that Bing himself sang the song in the movie or TV production.

A standard title has been chosen for each piece of music, using conventional American-English spelling and punctuation. The title actually printed on the music may vary slightly in spelling, punctuation, or word spacing.

There was some question as to whether we should include the professional black and white editions (abbreviated as pro. b&w) that the publishers printed to be distributed for promotional purposes. Since these editions are prized by some collectors, we decided to include them. Many of these have covers with generic artwork (a man playing piano, fancy scrolls, etc.). Some do not have a cover, and the promotional information has been inserted on the first page of the music. Nearly all had warnings that the music was for professional use and was not to be sold. Some sheets are labeled Advance Artist Copy instead of Professional Copy.

Word-by-word (not letter-by-letter) alphabetizing has been used. This is also known as the "nothing before something" rule. That means that a space takes precedence over a letter in filing. This is standard American library procedure. The initial articles a, an, and the have been placed at the end of the title to facilitate use. Punctuation in the title has been ignored as far as alphabetizing is concerned.

The listing consists of the title (in caps), the movie or TV show in which it was featured (in italics), date of publication of the music and/or year a movie was released, and varying issues of the music that have been found.

Bing sang thousands of songs in his time. Not all of them had his name and/or picture on the sheet music, of course, and probably most collectors have a lot of these in their files. We have not attempted to list any of them.

With very few exceptions, only the front covers of the sheet music have been considered as far as variations are concerned. There may also be variations on the back covers or in the printing of the music itself.
