I got reminded today why I like Bing Crosby as more than just an entertainer. The reminder was courtesy of Oprah, who has been throwing a tantrum since she was denied admission to a swank Paris shop 15 minutes after it closed. Oprah apparently believes that as a celebrity she deserves special treatment, and has attempted to 'get even' by shouting "racism." Perhaps she could use a session with Dr. Phil, or take a lesson in humility from Bing. Whereas many lesser celebrities pontificate as if they were experts in foreign policy or science ... and demand red-carpet treatment wherever they go, Bing to the end denied he was anything special. He was content to drive his own car or ride the subway with the average Joe or keep his political views to himself .... Ah, if more celebrities were as humble as Bing ...

In closing my presentation at Hofstra, I referred Bing to being what Rex Harrison snag in 'My Fair Lady' --- i.e. 'I'm an ordinary man'.

To recap things I've mentioned before:

when I met Bing in Seattle in 1957, he asked if I was going to LA and when I answered 'yes', he said go and see my brother. (no doubt a lot of exchange went on at Hofstra and Gonzaga when we met Bing fans and swapped addresses etc).

Then in London I rang his hotel and he answered the phone (1967)

Then again in London in 1975 after I had left some info on my golf course at Reading and asked if he had time for some golf. I left the stuff at about midday and at 3.00pm then my office phone rang and when I said hello, the voice at the other end said-- it's Bing Crosby here'.

Then there was being denied a room at the Hotel Vancouver.

All these things he did and accepted and other so called 'big' stars would never do this, particularly FS.

He was an ordinary man - probably more than just an ordinary man, an extra special human being.

Thanks Bing.

"Bingo", Steven (pun intended). You've hit the nail on the head, for me anyway.

I thank all of you for reminding us of Bing's humility. I still love the man for his character as well as his talent.
