Bing Was So Loud

Many of you ...probably, in fact, most of you have been fans of Bing for years. And it must be really neat to have followed someone for so long. I personally, have only about 5 years of "fan-dome" logged. I have relatively few unique Bing experiences and I assure you, no personal memories of his life to draw from... (I was born in '78). That being said, I often feel a bit lost for words when reading the posts here... I'm not always certain what everyone is talking about as regards factual information and statistics and things. I will forever be enthralled, though by your stories that you share. Fascinated by the chance you had to meet such a rare individual and the things you've taken from those encounters.

My favorite personal "pseudo-encounter" however happened still a little over 6 months ago. As it happens, I work in Entertainment at Disney World (in Florida) and with that comes the benefit of being allowed into the parks free of charge. Every Christmas, of course, they bring millions upon millions of "twinkle lights" to New York Street at MGM Studios. This past Christmas I went one evening to the park to see if they were officially "lit" yet because I knew it was to happen some night that week. When I arrived, the sun had just set but New York Street remained in the dark. They were playing Christmas music over the loud speaker, but the lights were not on except a few here and there as they were being tested.

I strolled down the empty street for a few minutes while I listened to a little Celine Dion, Nat King Cole and whatever happened to be broadcast over the decorated facades. As I was about to head toward the "Backlot" and off of New York Street, I heard that familiar introduction and Bing's voice singing "White Christmas" serenading the ... oh three or four of us on the street. I paused a minute to listen because it isn't often you hear Bing in Disney World (aside from an occasional radio show at Sid Cahuenga's). He was so loud, it might as well have been him singing. I was enveloped by the sound. (And perfectly at peace, mind you...) It was only seconds into the song when the whole street lit up... Millions of lights cascading down the building facades and on the rooftops. The whole street was aglow whilst Bing sang to us... well, again, the three or four of us who were lucky enough to treasure the moment. The lights didn't stay on through the whole song... they were only still testing them... to make sure they'd turn on together the following night at the display's opening, I presume. But I was glad they picked that moment to try them all at once. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and maybe get a start to meeting some of you...

Auburn, how nice of you to share such a wonderful moment with us. I can assure you that no one here judges someone by the number of Crosby experiences, total knowledge of the statistics, nor number of years of "fandom". In fact, I think, we gather here to share experiences, knowledge and insights rather than to impress anyone with facts. I think Bing would approve of that. (Although I commend Steven Lewis for putting together this site so that fans like me can keep the facts straight!) Hope you keep contributing; it's what we're all here for. Looking forward to seeing more posts from you.

I love seeing posts from 'new' fans of Bing's! I hope someday soon to see my daughter post here...I have hope, tho, as I sometimes overhear her singing "Dinah" or "World on a String" while she's getting ready for school...she'll never admit it, tho! ;-)

When I was in Calgary, prior to attending Gonzaga, there were loud speakers in one of the streets and happily I heard Bing singing. I asked a store if it was theirs and they said the City did it.

Thanks for sharing your experience here, Auburn. Like Tom, I was able to visualize it perfectly through your wonderful description, and it even gave me chills. So, now there are more than four or five lucky souls who can imagine the thrill of the lights going up on Bing's personal serenade at Disney. Hope you continue to post here, and welcome!!

Great story, reading it I did get a tingle down me spine. Reminded me being in the mall at Christmas time and hearing that familiar opening 4 notes and I knew I was about to hear Bing sing his one and only. People I was with didn't know any better, as soon as I heard the opening note I said, "Bing's about to sing, listen." It was great hearing it so loud throughout the whole mall, made me wish Bing could be played all year with so many other great songs he recorded, it would be a dream come true to hear songs like "My Girl's An Irish Girl" or even "Swingin' Down The Lane" during the rest of the year at the mall. I got that same tingly feeling reading your story as it reminded me so much of that Christmas day in the mall with Bing singing to everyone. Wow.

Hi Auburn, I'm just popping in (from Perth, Western Australia) to add my thanks for sharing your story (it gave me tingles as well just imagining it). Please share with us as often as you like. While everyone may not reply, as a "member" of this Board for around 4 years now, I'm sure that 99.9% read and digest all the messages.

Judy, oh how I wish I had got my daughter interested in Bing when she was little. Of course now (at the age of 22) she just rolls her eyes but I might add she doesn't hesitate to let me know when she hears Bing anywhere outside the home, ie in movies, on the wireless etc so I'm hoping that years from now she might think differently.

Lee I can relate to what you say as well - I've often been somewhere with our group of friends and been the one who says "here comes Bing" or words to that effect (and as usual they just look at me pretending to be interested but you can see it in their eyes what they're thinking)!!
