I was watching the made for TV film, "Babe',last night (early this morning), the story of Babe Didrikson, starring Susan Clark and Alex Karras. I heard a familiar voice, and there was Ken Carpenter as an announcer (type casting) at the Olympics that Didrikson competed in. Ken's hair was mostly white in this film, made in 1975. This is the oldest Ken Carpenter I have ever seen. |

Ken Carpenter was interviewed on camera for the May 1978 ABC-tv special "Bing Crosby: His Life and Legend", probably one of his last TV appearances. He died October 16, 1984. |

Always like hearing Ken's voice. He sure did alot of radio series. At various times you can hear him on: The Great Gildersleeve, The Halls of Ivy, Command Performance, The Life of Riley, and The Lux Radio Theatre. |

Ken Carpenter -- or "Kensington Carpenter" as Bing often called him on the Kraft Music Hall -- was one of my mentors and role mnodels when I was in radio. He was a master of the friendly congenial next door neighbor voice. He was quite well read and knowledgeable with a great vocabulary and an impressive command of the language, but never pedantic or condescending--always affable an approachable. His humor was often self-effacing, and he was a great complement to his co-players. I admire his style and sound so much--though I never was able to equal it. He had a great talent, and he remained with Bing as Bing moved to the General Electric show and the Chesterfield show. Clearly, Bing had respect and affection for Ken Carpenter. You can also hear him on the "Uusual Occupation" shorts featured on Turner Classic Movies. Thanks for mentioning this truly accomplished voice of classic radio. |
