Just got connected to the Internet last night, and guess who's web site was the first one I headed for! I think you're doing a fantastic job, Steven. You certainly do Bing proud. I'm sure most of the folks who read these messages are already members of Bing's fan club, which just celebrated it's 60th anniversary last year (1936-96), but for those who aren't members and would like more info., here's the address (no e-mail address as of yet): Club Crosby 435 So. Hi, folks, Glenn Taranto here again. I'm "borrowing" time on my friend Steele's AOL program. I just got the new Jonzo CD #12 and it's great. Also found four great blue label titles the same day for fifty cents a disc. It was a great day for King Bing!

I was wondering if there was anyone out there who could help get a campaign started or info leading to the release of Bing's REPRISE recordings. I feel that, as more time passes since Bing's untimely death, these original tapes will start to disintigrate and it will be too late. The time to save these things is now. (Even Bing's HEY JUDE album because I bet any amount of money this album would become a cult classic due to the Beatles tune Bing sings.)

Sure as a two lane highway eventually becomes a six lane freeway, Bing will have a major resurgence and those of us who have always been fans of Crosby's will have to ask ourselves why someone didn't just build the freeway in the first place!

An interesting tidbit: on the alternate audio track of the laserdisc of NEW YORK, NEW YORK, director Martin Scorsese states that the Robert DeNiro character was inspired by Bing Crosby's character in BLUE SKIES. Scorsese wondered what would happen to an irresponsible character like Crosby's "Johnny" in a more realistic and unforgiving setting than that of a traditional movie musical. The result was DeNiro's character.

Bing Crosby was our host in 1975 when our radio station recreated a live two-hour Command Performance program on Treasure Island. As Bing came to the microphone to do various announcing chores and appear in skits he would take each completed page in his fingers and dropping his arm to his side let the page fall silently the remaining short distance to the floor.

In talking to some veterans I learned this practice was more common when scripts were lengthy or bulky and when they were concerned about spilling contents as they proceeded from page to page.

My final remembrance of that date involving scripts was when Bing invited our musical director Meredith Willson to the microphone to say a few carefully scripted words. Meredith forgot momentarily we were recreating a radio program and walked to the mike sans script just planning to shoot the breeze with Bing. After ad-libbing for a while, which Bing did with ease, we managed to get Meredith's script to him and they finished the bit as planned.

Along with the LP was a catalog with a small section (in tiny print) of Bing LP's including...Goldilocks (Promo), Seasons and several more. There was also this statement. "To receive our additional listing of over 20 Bing Crosby related LP's - Kraft Music Hall radio shows, live recordings, coversations, etc please send a S.A.S.E. As a follow-up to my previous message that new single on the new Peggy Lee CD "Best of The Decca Years" is called "The Possibility's There" it was recorded on Nov. 22, 1955. I looked it up in my Bing Discography book and it wasn't listed, but it sounds great with some double entendre-lyrics and has a full band backing them. There's also 2 Peggy Lee CD's put out by Laser Light with Bing & Peggy duets included. On volume one in addition to the Peggy songs there are these Bing duets: Baby You Can Count on Me, It's A Good Day, Golden Earings, and Maybe You'll Be There. All these I identified from Bing's radio shows except the last one "Maybe You'll Be There" this I don't know where it comes from. On Laser Light Vol. 2 there's only one Bing duet. I found all 3 of these CD's at Tower Records. It's good knowing there are so many Bing fans out there. I wish I could find Bing's movie "Top o' The Morning", this would be great for St. Patty's Day.

It says "Thank you very much for your recent letter and for your kindly comment. I only hope that I may be able to continue to merit your interest and approval. (new Paragraph) The photograph you requested is enclosed with sincere good wishes. Cordially yours Bing." The picture is a waist up shot with Bing smiling and his hands are in the jacket pockets. It says "Thanking you for your interest Bing Crosby" There are some small tears at the bottom of the letter. I'm interested in finding out the value of the 2 pieces and if anyone might be interested in buying for the right price.

I came across some records in a thrift shop one day, I started flipping through them & there were some 78's. But alas, no Bing!

But something caught my eye! It's a Decca album #723 Titled Manhattan Tower (Gordon Jenkins and his orchestra). The corner on the binder edge was a little torn and underneath I saw the letters BING CR. There was no doubt in my mind that this was originally a Crosby album but had been recovered & a new label was affixed! I have yet to peel the label off to see WHAT Crosby album it really is.

Does anyone have ANY information on WHY they did this and any other info? I would be greatly appreciative. Dan

I enjoy reading the bulletin board and have used it a couple times. But I must admit I find it a bit boring when fans keep asking how much a particular Bing record is worth. Folks do yourself a favor and walk into any typical new record store and check out the Bing section. Thats your first clue. If you are fortunate and live near a Tower or Best Buy then you can browse thru some Crosby CDs. Thats your first clue - CDs. Folks they are not making 78s anymore and even though some vinyl is still being manufactured it is mostly the music of today (new wave, Beatles, etc.) Even though you would think 78s would be valuable and to some people they still are just try and find those some people. Gosh I hope I'm not discouraging folks from finding buyers for their Crosby memorabilia, but if you are serious in selling it please put it up for auction or take out an ad for Goldmine magazine or Discoveries. My experience is that it is hard to unload 78s. I have had better luck selling some Crosby LPs. I think its the artwork and packaging that will keep vinyl somewhat valuable. I gave all of my Crosby 78s away years ago and don't regret it one bit. I find most 78s to be unattractive, hard to store and very tedious to play, etc. Well anyhow I just thought I would get my 2 cents worth in. If some other fans have other opinions on how valuable 78s are I would like to hear from them. All the best Richard

This is a terrific page on Mr. C!!!! Checked out some of the previous E-Mail and answered many of the questions. For example, "My Heart is A Hobo" is a cute song from "Welcome Stanger" which Bing sang with Barry Fitzgerald, in part. The song was on one of the albums in the "Bing's Hollywood" series from the fifties from Decca(now MCA). Only a couple of the "Bing's Hollywood" albums have so far been released on CD. The movie, "Welcome Stranger" is one of Bing's best, in my opinion. The flick was released in 1947 and starred Bing, Barry Fitzgerald, Joan Caulfield and Wanda Hendrix. It's on TV a lot, usually on AMC.

Here's my query: Where is High Tor????????? I remember seeing it on CBS in March, 1956. It was part of the Ford Star Jubilee and an album (very rare) was released by Decca. Arthur Schwartz was the producer and Maxwell Anderson was also involved. "High Tor" was a film. Was it made in color? Where is the film? Who now owns the rights to it?? Will MCA ever release a CD of the album? To my knowledge, the film has never been shown on TV since that first airing in 1956. It's also, I think, Julie Andrews' first American television performance. When the show was telecast, Ms Andrews was just about to open in "My Fair Lady" on Broadway. Thanks, Hy Agens

I need a photo of Paul Whiteman's Old Gold Special touring train. I know it was decorated in some way for advertising purposes. I know the last car somehow turned into a bandstand for stops in the smaller train stations. Thanks!

When I was a kid I played all his songs
Up in my room I'd sing along
I loved his voice, so soft and so strong
It's hard to believe Bing Crosby's gone.

THE BIG BROADCAST: I am in need for a copy of the movie "The Big Broadcast" starring our friend Bing Crosby. During the Christmas of 1990 I was stuck in a bad snow storm. After paying formy hotel room I only had enough money for a pizza and gas so there I sat eating pizza with my dog when I turned on AMC and there it was. A few months later I was able to tape the movie but that copy has been destroyed. If you have a copy I will pay for your troubles. PLEASE HELP ME...Andrew R. Cook Chicago, IL

I'm a big fan of Bing Crosby. I attended his 50th Anniversary concert in LA, his concert in San Francisco, and also his last American concert at the Concord Pavillion, in Concord, CA. I'm trying to locate a videotape of his 50th Anniversary concert made for television, that starred Bob Hope, the Mills Bros., Bette Midler, Pearl Bailey, and many others. If you have any info on this, please send email or send info to: Bill Griffiths, 3835 NE Sumner, Portland, OR97211 / Thank you very much

Hi Gang! Just thought you might like to know that the first in the JONZO series of "The Chronological Bing Crosby" is out on CD from the UK and available through Wig Wiggins. This is Vol. 11 - 1932. It includes all known alternates and the sound is superb - just like the LP series some of you may remember. It's $19.50 (post paid) and you can get it by sending your check or money order to: F.B Wiggins 5608 North 34'th St. Arlington, VA 22207 (Wig represents the International Club Crosby - if you don't belong you should! Ask him about membership and their quarterly magazine.) Your Friend in Bing, Billy

Bing Crosby owned an English Setter during the 1940..1950 years. I believe the "call name" of the dog was "Bing". Does anyone know the registered name? Thank you.

I have the original vinyl cut (audio disc 5224) of a recording Bing Crosby made of two songs, the names I am not sure of. Both were flubs. I know these were recorded sometime prior to 1947 in New York in a studio there. Can anyone help me to identify these songs, what year they were recorded and under what label? This is how the first side goes: "Why must I go on dreaming of an imaginary love. I wish I had someone to sing to. One that I could kiss and cling to. No one hears my serenade in blue. --- No one hears my serenade. -What the hell happened to me, son of a bitch, what's that melody?"

The second side goes like this:
"Just remember the sunshine always follows the rain. Wrap your troubles in dreams, dream your troubles away. --- Whistle and dream your cares away. Castles my tumble that's fate, after all, life's really funny that way. -- Sang the wrong melody - will play it back - see what it sounds like - hey, hey. They cut out 8 bars, the bastards, they didn't tell me what 8 bars they were goin to cut - why doesn't somebody tell me these things around here, I'm going off my nut."
I would like to find out if this record may be collectible, and if so, if anyone may be interested in purchasing it.

In the army I came across the famous Crosby flubs tape. I remember the "yo cut out 8 bars, you dirty bastards"...and the "Jingle bells, jingle bells, holy jesus christ" version he did with the Andrews Sisters. Is it still possible to get a copy of that tape today? Please let me know. BURT WILSON

Thought I would share with all the Crosby fans the recent passing of Bill Osborn of Seattle, Washington. Bill was a favorite at Crosby banquets sharing his wit, wisdom and ribald humor. He was a frequent contributor to many Crosby journals and is well known for his extensive Crosby Collection in both record and tapes. He is well known for his several interviews with Bing and for his contribution to the Bing Crosby Historical Society. He was a great friend to yours truly and he will be missed.
